My Mother began doing the family history back in the 70's when everything had to be done by mail or with a personal visit. Or you could pay a researcher. There are some copies of census data that she paid $2 to a researcher to get. She amassed quite a bit of information and a lot of it was from talking with people who remembered names, dates, and places. I remember on one of her visits here we went to the National Archives in Washington, D.C., and spent the day looking through ships' logs trying to find a listing for my father's father and family who came over from Ireland in 1882. We spent hours looking through microfilm records and had no success. And because my Mom had gotten far enough back in the family that any more research would have to be done in foreign countries, she more or less gave it up and gave all the information to me.<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>This is my great aunt Rose.</i><i>She was a bit of a black sheep - she was a show girl.</i><i>I have pictures of her dressed in her follies costume. </i><i>She was killed in a car accident.</i></div>
<br />
I entered all the information onto the computer but never really went any further with it until about 2 years ago when a family member asked what information I had on one of the branches. It was then that I discovered that there is a wealth of information online and much of it is free. Census data, in particular, tells a story in 10 year increments, and depending on what information was being gathered, reveals quite a bit of history. Birth records, marriage records, draft registration records, and death records lead me ever deeper into my ancestors and I'm constantly discovering new cousins.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<i><br /></i></div>
<span style="text-align: left;">I joined Ancestry.com and was immediately sucked in by their little waving leaf symbols. These indicate that there is a hint to some more information on that particular person. It's like a never ending spiral - information leads to more information which leads to more information. It can be overwhelming. One of the hints led to another website called Findagrave.com. For the past ten years, volunteers have been entering data from cemeteries and also taking pictures of headstones and uploading them. There are currently 101 million grave records so it's pretty likely that some one you know is listed there somewhere. So now I'm finding out where many of my ancestors are buried, most of them in the Chicago area. And I'm thinking that it would be interesting to visit these cemeteries and find the gravesites of as many people in my tree as I can.</span>

<i><br /></i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I present the idea to my sister, who is slightly less than enthusiastic about this adventure, but is willing to humor me. She will drive me around to the various cemeteries and help me find the gravesites. Now I start calling cemeteries and asking for the locations of the graves. They are very helpful, as long as I only have a few names. But for one cemetery, I have 20 names, and Tom, the poor soul who answered the phone, said he couldn't do that over the phone. So I sent him my list, hoping that by the time we got there, he would have found everybody. It sort of worked out, he gave me a list of graves, and a map of the cemetery, and told me to take my cell phone with me. Who am I going to be calling, I ask? Well, just because I have a map and a location, doesn't mean I can walk right to the grave. Things aren't in nice neat rows and columns, and are definitely not marked. I'm to call Tom and give him a name that I can see, and he will tell me where I am, and which direction I need to walk. Six phone calls later, we had found most of what we were looking for.</div>

<span style="text-align: start;">Things I learned - lots of people can be buried in the same plot and not all of them have a headstone, especially infants and small children. Marble is not a good material for headstones because it weathers terribly. Stones that are flat on the ground are slowly but surely covered over with grass. </span></div>

<i>The Patrick Nolan who died in 1925 </i><i>is my great grandfather. His son, Patrick J., </i><i>died earlier than he did.</i></div>
<br />
We really wanted to find the gravesite of our grandmother Sadie, who died of breast cancer in 1940. In my Mother's genealogy papers was a plot description from Calvary Cemetery. In this plot nine people had been buried, including our grandmother Sadie, grandfather Frank, and great grandmother Margaret. The first day we were there we hunted all over and all we saw was a large grassy area. This was most upsetting to think that all traces of these people were gone. On our return the next day Tom told us that there definitely was a grave marker on this plot, so we returned to the area. This time when I called Tom, he stayed on the line while I gave him names. Not far enough, then too far, okay right block. Now move south 4 plots. Then we see it. It's a marble monolith about 5 feet high and extremely weathered. We can barely read the names, but there is enough to know this is the right one.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The plot listing tells the sad story: Infant of Patrick Nolan, died October 14, 1885. Mother Margaret died 2 days later. Childbirth was a very dangerous event in the 19th century.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We spent 4 days total and I have about 40 pictures. I'm discovering new relationships and have even made contact with a second cousin I had never knew existed. It's odd to have memories of the same people and places, share some genes, and yet be virtual strangers. Imagine visiting the old countries and finding cousins there also! </div>

After waiting nine months I can post the image of my quilt that is now in Quilt National 2013. It is titled Post No Bills and is the result of a "what have I got to lose" feeling when the piece was not cooperating with me and I didn't like what was happening on it. Big graphic black X's, I mean, haven't you wanted to do something like that on a piece that just wasn't working?<div>

The opening was this past weekend at the <a href="http://www.dairybarn.org/quilt/" target="_blank">Dairy Barn</a> in Athens, Ohio and 69 of the 85 selected artists attended, along with the 3 jurors. This is my second acceptance in Quilt National and this one was just as exciting and humbling as the previous one. <br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
A few days before the opening I had a terrible dream. I went into the exhibit and the quilts were hung very strangely - three high, with one above the other, and they used clothespins. Sort of like they had been hung at a state fair. But worse than that, I walked 'round and 'round, and I could not find my quilt. Not a very good situation. So, just to prove that it is actually hanging there, here is a picture.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The catalog is very well done. The pictures in the catalog never capture the essence of the work, but this one comes fairly close. And the colors are mostly true. They have changed publishers this year to DragonThreads and the catalog will not be available on Amazon. You will have to purchase it directly from the Dairy Barn or <a href="http://www.dragonthreads.com/books/quilt_national_13.htm" target="_blank">DragonThreads</a> for $29.95 plus shipping.</div>

It's a continuation of my Scribble series, now up to 18. The background fabric looks like it's monoprinted on a gelatin plate with the impressions of a furnace filter (the turquoise blue circles) and a thermofax screen taken from a picture of a fence done with curlicues. Not totally sure about the monoprinting, it may be screen printed with thickened dye.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The Benefit Auction is the main money raiser for <a href="http://www.saqa.com/" target="_blank">SAQA</a> and I have donated every year that they have had it. That gets me a bunch of stars on the listing page. This year they are putting all the quilts on a <a href="http://pinterest.com/saqaart/saqa-benefit-auction-2013/" target="_blank">pinterest</a> page, I guess so that people can repin them to their own pinterest pages. I have a pinterest page, but I don't think there is anything on it. Occasionally I get a notice that someone is "following" me, and all I can think is that they are going to be pretty bored because I have not gotten into the pinterest thing.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have been spending lots of time in my garden. In previous years, my garden was not very interesting since it was in deep shade. I grew lots of impatiens, hosta, and ferns. Last year all my impatiens died, due to a fungus, and so I had no color at all in the shade. (This year the garden shop is not even selling impatiens.) A few weeks ago we decided to take out the maple tree that was shading the deck and garden. It was a very messy tree and dripped sap and all kinds of other junk all summer long. The huge up side of taking this tree out is that my former deep shade garden is now a full sun garden. Yippee! There are so many more interesting plants available for a sun garden and I want them all! And because I had an electrical outlet put on the outside of the new garage, I was finally able to put in a water feature - this little fountain. I bought a fountain kit online, but it would be easy to construct this just by buying the parts locally. The only semi-difficult part would be drilling a hole for the tube though the rocks. The water drips over the rocks and down into a 5 gallon bucket buried underneath the stones. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It makes the most pleasing water dribbling sound and I love it. I decided I needed a second water feature, but didn't have another available outlet that I could use. Guess what - they make immersible pumps powered by solar panels. Of course, this means the pump only works when there is sun shining, but I found one that has a battery that will store energy. I installed it yesterday, and even though it was a mostly cloudy day, the pump ran for the rest of the day and even after dark. It was still running at 10pm, so that's pretty cool. I hope to gets lots of bird visitors.</div>

The weather was perfect and I was pleased with the turnout. I rearranged the tables to allow for open space in the center of the room (love those rolling tables!), put out lots of food, and hung some work. In addition to inviting lots of fiber friends, I also invited neighbors on the street who had to suffer through the construction and look at the spot-a-pot and huge dumpster for several months. As I suspected, they were all very curious as to what we had constructed.<br />

I'm showing off my closet space, and received lots of oohs and aahs. If my calculations are correct, there is more than 600 cubic feet of storage. I had to accommodate for the sloping ceiling, so everything is arranged by height, but it is all being put to use. </div>

All in all, I think it was quite successful, and I'm thinking about another one in a year or so. Maybe I can recruit some other artists in the area and we can have a studio tour. </div>

I always get involved in this, and have been in charge of hanging the show many times. I think this is the 4th time. Hanging the show involves planning where each quilt will be hung, hiring the pole and drape company, supervising the actual hanging, and also supervising the take down at the end of the show. It's easier now than the first two times I did this because we hire a company to come in an set up the poles and drapes. We used to rent a hanging system from another guild. It was made of wooden poles and used sheets as drapes. It was adequate, but looked home made. Getting it set up involved renting a truck to get the poles, getting volunteers to load and unload the truck, getting volunteers to set up the poles, getting volunteers to take down the poles, getting volunteers to reload the truck, drive to the storage facility, and unload the truck. This was a daunting task, not to mention physically challenging. We're not getting any younger. It costs to have this company come in, but when you figure the cost of renting the hanging system and renting a truck, and the huge hassle factor, it's worth every penny. And it looks very professional.<br />

If you are in the Baltimore area the weekend of March 16-17, I hope you will take the opportunity to visit our show. There will be more than 300 quilts on display, plus multiple opportunities to spend money. We have vendors, a members' sale table, silent auction, and a room full of fabric remnants for sale at bargain prices. Hope to see you there!</div>

They want studio pictures and more. So I have been guilted into updating this. It would just sound whiny if I tried to make excuses, so I won't.
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-tQwvkeIolbQ/USENzfxLFRI/AAAAAAAABuo/WE7gTEj4fjQ/s1600/IMG_0659.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-tQwvkeIolbQ/USENzfxLFRI/AAAAAAAABuo/WE7gTEj4fjQ/s320/IMG_0659.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It is very difficult to get back into the swing of things when you have been away from it for so long. I spent many days organizing my studio and putting stuff away, hoping that I can find it again when I need it. I just couldn't seem to get into an art mode, so I made some sock monkeys, some pillows, and some curtains. Then I decided to give myself a kick in the pants by doing some surface design. I have not done any deconstructed screen printing for a very long time, probably several years, so this was my choice. Dug out the notebook with class notes and thought it would be a good idea to review the DVD that Kerr Grabowski did.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-GX9X2q9iWqM/USENzcdrkyI/AAAAAAAABus/mRkrWU5LSqM/s1600/IMG_0658.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-GX9X2q9iWqM/USENzcdrkyI/AAAAAAAABus/mRkrWU5LSqM/s320/IMG_0658.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: left;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I know I moved that DVD over to the studio and there aren't that many places that it could be. Still, it took several days of thinking and looking before I located it.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-KDY9MDwj_iQ/USENzeMACGI/AAAAAAAABuw/GwRHI88EgTM/s1600/IMG_0660.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-KDY9MDwj_iQ/USENzeMACGI/AAAAAAAABuw/GwRHI88EgTM/s320/IMG_0660.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
One of the reasons I wanted to do this DSP was to find out if my studio was warm enough for the dyes to batch without having to add extra heat. They need at least 4 hours of 70 degree heat, preferably hotter and longer.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-SGMP8Gw3aPM/USENzlUfxmI/AAAAAAAABu0/qoCwIANVkv8/s1600/IMG_0661.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-SGMP8Gw3aPM/USENzlUfxmI/AAAAAAAABu0/qoCwIANVkv8/s320/IMG_0661.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I worked on the first pieces and let them batch sitting in front of a south facing window. The studio itself is only about 64 degrees, according to the heat pump control. But with direct sun in the window, that spot gets warmer. Batched them for at least a day, then washed them out and they came out as expected.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EFeyf2uPiNo/USENzuw5dII/AAAAAAAABu8/s2r9Y2V-xsY/s1600/IMG_0663.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EFeyf2uPiNo/USENzuw5dII/AAAAAAAABu8/s2r9Y2V-xsY/s320/IMG_0663.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I had an idea - I could batch the fabrics in the powder room and put a little heater in there. That would jack the temperature up way above 70. Did that for the second set of fabrics. But they did not turn out as expected - all were a lot lighter than I thought they should be. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5bw35DufF94/USENz4xMvDI/AAAAAAAABvA/HIOfCalgf9Q/s1600/IMG_0664.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5bw35DufF94/USENz4xMvDI/AAAAAAAABvA/HIOfCalgf9Q/s320/IMG_0664.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There are a lot of factors that could have caused this. Maybe I didn't put enough dye into the print paste. Some of the fabrics were from the first session and I was over printing them, so I had to put the soda ash fixer into the print paste - maybe I didn't put enough in. Or maybe I was using print paste that had exhausted already. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-fP_qnwNf9AQ/USEN0P2MuyI/AAAAAAAABvU/h1376HYfXp8/s1600/IMG_0665.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-fP_qnwNf9AQ/USEN0P2MuyI/AAAAAAAABvU/h1376HYfXp8/s320/IMG_0665.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I did get some great markings and after putting my original expectations out of my mind, the fabrics all turned out great. Or mostly great, and certainly useable.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-YmhXo94jsMw/USEN0dDg2gI/AAAAAAAABvY/b7QgEFq9WwM/s1600/IMG_0669.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-YmhXo94jsMw/USEN0dDg2gI/AAAAAAAABvY/b7QgEFq9WwM/s320/IMG_0669.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here are pictures of the studio. All along the left is my design wall - 4 sheets of 4x8 insulation covered with fleece, 16 feet of design wall. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-K4kCYlBuwxs/USEN0RLVhRI/AAAAAAAABvc/Qi6BzclurIE/s1600/IMG_0668.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-K4kCYlBuwxs/USEN0RLVhRI/AAAAAAAABvc/Qi6BzclurIE/s320/IMG_0668.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have 3 work tables. For the one in the front I took a large piece of cardboard that the table was delivered in, covered it with rug padding, then felt, then plastic. Makes a nice print surface.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Z_WjVd5_-Oc/USEN0i7OAwI/AAAAAAAABvg/lvVoEDq7mhE/s1600/IMG_0671.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Z_WjVd5_-Oc/USEN0i7OAwI/AAAAAAAABvg/lvVoEDq7mhE/s320/IMG_0671.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
All three tables are elevated and on wheels. This turned out to be a tricky project. I've used pvc pipe in the past to elevate tables, but the pipes sat right on the floor and splayed out. This wouldn't work for putting them on rollers. Turns out that the tables legs fit snugly into 1" diameter pvc pipe, and so they could be seated vertically in a support with casters on the bottom. Then we discovered that the tables were slightly different in where the legs attached and how wide apart they are, and one was slightly splayed. Each set of rollers had to be custom made. I named the tables Amy, Beth, and Carol and wrote that on both the tables and the rollers. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-62nOZ09zZOw/USEN0mq6HfI/AAAAAAAABvo/TH-vGhWymHE/s1600/IMG_0670.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-62nOZ09zZOw/USEN0mq6HfI/AAAAAAAABvo/TH-vGhWymHE/s320/IMG_0670.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Looking towards the sink area. I love having this right next to where I'm working. So much easier than my old studio. And much brighter.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And now to a Before and After set of pictures. The Before pictures are from a Blog Post from June 27, 2005. I had just come home from QSDS and did a major clean out and reorganization of my basement studio. See the pictures <a href="http://fiberstudio.blogspot.com/2005/06/cleaned-out-and-rearranged.html">here.</a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-dvvsvYSWkzk/USEN1JdqovI/AAAAAAAABvk/C2SlxBA5e-c/s1600/IMG_0672.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-dvvsvYSWkzk/USEN1JdqovI/AAAAAAAABvk/C2SlxBA5e-c/s320/IMG_0672.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This is what it looks like now - new paint job, new carpet, furniture. All of the grandkids toys have been moved down here and also the tv. This is the new play area. Still looks a little spartan, but there is lots of space for doing acrobatics.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4mikwPaP79o/USEN1G8SgbI/AAAAAAAABvs/by63ManUgj0/s1600/IMG_0673.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4mikwPaP79o/USEN1G8SgbI/AAAAAAAABvs/by63ManUgj0/s320/IMG_0673.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And have you ever seen such a clean and un-cluttered basement? All my wet studio stuff was back here, plus lots of power tools, and a fair amount of junk. A ton of stuff went to the studio, another ton of stuff went to the garage, and two tons of stuff went to the dump. With new walls, a newly painted floor (that you can actually see), and lots of light, it could be an operating room. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-bKQk6ObFJ10/USEN1acx_bI/AAAAAAAABv0/2AipJKICyog/s1600/IMG_0674.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-bKQk6ObFJ10/USEN1acx_bI/AAAAAAAABv0/2AipJKICyog/s320/IMG_0674.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Let's see how long it stays that way.</div>
<br />Cathy Kleemanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10304025544005408008noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10606229.post-68279107291669746402013-01-21T07:00:00.000-05:002013-01-21T07:32:29.357-05:00What I FoundIn all the cleaning out and moving, I found lots of old stuff that I had forgotten about. In particular, many old quilts. Some of them weren't worth saving, so they are gone now. But then I came across a piece that I made when I turned 50. As I remember, it was a pretty traumatic event. Now, as I am about to turn 65, I would much rather be turning 50 instead. This piece is titled Oh No! 50! A little bit of editing with paint and now it more accurately reflects the times.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9omZl5oBrns/UPwSGuqHFHI/AAAAAAAABuI/IcII3TDBOU0/s1600/OhNo50.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9omZl5oBrns/UPwSGuqHFHI/AAAAAAAABuI/IcII3TDBOU0/s320/OhNo50.jpg" width="213" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The signature required an amendment also.</div>
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This makes me wonder where I will be and what will I be doing in 15 more years. Sort of a scary thought.</div>
Cathy Kleemanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10304025544005408008noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10606229.post-23614936039526269322013-01-12T17:40:00.000-05:002013-01-12T17:40:11.721-05:00Quilt StorageAfter more than 2 decades of making quilts, I have amassed quite a closet gallery. Actually, it outgrew the closet many years ago and expanded into a former bedroom that also happened to be my photography room. Occasionally it served as a guest room, but there was always the hazard of pins that had fallen into the carpet. Now, with my new studio, my goal was to consolidate all my quilts into one of the storage areas under the eaves. I thought about a storage system for a long time and finally came up with the idea of making rolling racks that would slide in and out of the closet area. The challenge was to make sure that the rack would fit through the elf door. And it also had to accommodate the sloping ceiling. I needed to make two racks: one to hold quilts narrower than 4 feet, and one for the wider quilts. I store my quilts rolled onto pipe insulation and inside a custom made bag.
The majority of quilts are in the less than 4 feet wide category, so this needed to be the larger rack. Larger in the sense that it had more shelves.<br />
<br />
So here it is - 4 feet long, 2 feet wide and 3 feet high. Masonite boards cut to fit make the base of each shelf. Each shelf has 3 cross bars, which you can sort of see where the T-joints are.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-9yONI-5RzL4/UPHhcI_zlgI/AAAAAAAABtc/FkpmEkj5MGY/s1600/Quilt+Rack+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-9yONI-5RzL4/UPHhcI_zlgI/AAAAAAAABtc/FkpmEkj5MGY/s320/Quilt+Rack+1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here it is loaded up with quilts. See how nicely it fits through the door? From the masonite that was left over, my husband cut 6" tall pieces. These help prevent the quilts from rolling off the edges.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ind0hPekgVM/UPHhcOV_GHI/AAAAAAAABtg/lhDaD290Oqs/s1600/Quilt+Rack+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ind0hPekgVM/UPHhcOV_GHI/AAAAAAAABtg/lhDaD290Oqs/s320/Quilt+Rack+2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The other rack is 6' long and also has 3 cross bars on each shelf, but it only has 2 shelves. It's narrower and lower because it has to fit in the closet where the ceiling is lower to the floor. The shelves on this longer one sag a bit. I couldn't figure out how to make a truss to support the pvc. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I should make some sort of chart where I can note the location of each quilt. All the bags are labeled with the title of the quilt, but rifling through all those bag ends is tedious. But really, I need a chart that tells me where I've put everything in the studio. I tried to be logical and store things according to how often I use them and also put them close to similar items, but I'm still opening and closing lots of drawers and boxes. Eventually I will remember where everything is. I hope.</div>

I've been working on the moving for at least two weeks and it's nearly complete. I haven't moved my quilts over yet because the storage racks have yet to be built, but that will happen real soon now. Most everything else has made the trip, and I have the sore knees to prove it. Six steps up from the basement, out the back door, in the studio door, and up 15 steps, carrying boxes and stuff. Wow, do I have a lot of stuff.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RPtCi6vRrdk/UOQlhQgexlI/AAAAAAAABsY/BmVUu37T-Gw/s1600/Dec+31+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RPtCi6vRrdk/UOQlhQgexlI/AAAAAAAABsY/BmVUu37T-Gw/s320/Dec+31+1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
These cabinets are for the wet studio area. I filled them up with paints, dyes, brushes, measuring cups, chemicals, syringes. I thought I would have enough room to also store all the stamps and other marking tools in these cabinets also, but that was a delusion. That stuff filled up two rolling metal basket carts.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-RzFpumY8SWE/UOQlh8n-3SI/AAAAAAAABsg/6xlGO73lycQ/s1600/Dec+31+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-RzFpumY8SWE/UOQlh8n-3SI/AAAAAAAABsg/6xlGO73lycQ/s320/Dec+31+2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Inside the larger closet. The builders left the roll ends of tyvek, and I used it to cover part of the walls. There was heavy aluminum foil covering the insulation and the tyvek will prevent me accidentally punching a hole in that when moving stuff around. Notice the nice shelves at the far end, courtesy of my dear husband. Behind the rolling carts are boxes with seldom used stuff. I need to make a map of where I've stashed things because I've already spent time trying to find stuff because I can't remember where I put it.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Home Depot (where we have spent a lot of time and money lately) has these plastic shelves that are quite inexpensive, very easy to assemble, easy to move around (while not holding anything), and will hold a remarkable amount of stuff. They come in various sizes. There is a white one tucked into the corner in the previous picture, and then I also bought this one. This is going to be the spot where I dump stuff. Previously the only place I could do that was on my work surface, and it rapidly became so cluttered I was always moving stuff around to open up enough area to work. Now there is a dedicated space.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I covered four 4x8 insulation boards with white fleece and put them on the long wall. This is a huge amount of design wall space and right now it's giving me artist block. I need to put something on it. Yesterday I made curtains for the windows that face the street, as I was feeling rather exposed up there. And I have to figure out the "work flow" - where to put the things I use so that they are close to where I use them. In the basement studio, everything was very close at hand since the space was pretty confined. Now, everything is more spread out and I don't want to spend too much time and too many steps to find my rulers and rotary cutters. It's a very nice problem to have.</div>
<br />Cathy Kleemanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10304025544005408008noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10606229.post-77321563161755248452012-12-11T16:05:00.000-05:002012-12-11T16:05:19.795-05:00Almost thereThe end is in sight (just in time for the end of the world...). Needs the bathroom fixtures and my work sink and cabinets. The plumbing needs to be hooked up. But it's really looking good and I'm really eager to get moving in.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-HJ07hLPyUrE/UMedDDUOHlI/AAAAAAAABrg/u11nOQneyNA/s1600/Dec+12+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-HJ07hLPyUrE/UMedDDUOHlI/AAAAAAAABrg/u11nOQneyNA/s320/Dec+12+1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The floor is linoleum. A real wood floor would be lovely, but I do not want to have to be careful with the paints and the dyes. My current studio has a rug and it has been highly decorated with spilled paints and hidden pins. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-iliPJAXCEZg/UMedM8sBWCI/AAAAAAAABr4/Xf7OxOHEsQ0/s1600/Oct+25+5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-iliPJAXCEZg/UMedM8sBWCI/AAAAAAAABr4/Xf7OxOHEsQ0/s320/Oct+25+5.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The view on October 25.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-0OFjdmxuXr0/UMedDjCKNxI/AAAAAAAABrk/lGrhqDm-740/s1600/Dec+12+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-0OFjdmxuXr0/UMedDjCKNxI/AAAAAAAABrk/lGrhqDm-740/s320/Dec+12+2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
From the same spot today. The earlier view is from before we decided to add the powder room. I regret loosing the space, but in the long run, having the facilities close by is a better choice. There will be a chair and end table and such comfy stuff in the yellow alcove. It will be a nice place to sit and contemplate my good fortune.</div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-kgFJ2_tGVQw/UMedD1pb3LI/AAAAAAAABrs/u8e3F0-_GDs/s1600/Dec+12+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-kgFJ2_tGVQw/UMedD1pb3LI/AAAAAAAABrs/u8e3F0-_GDs/s320/Dec+12+3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And looking back towards the stairwell. That very long wall on the right measures 18 feet and I'm going to cover 4 4x8 sheets of insulation with white fleece and it will become the design wall. We're really getting down to the nitty gritty stuff at the end of the project. I have so much stuff located in so many places around the house that it's going to take a massive effort to relocate everything into the studio. I sure hope there is room for everything.</div>
<br />Cathy Kleemanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10304025544005408008noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10606229.post-20465441312208763922012-11-29T20:17:00.001-05:002012-11-29T20:18:11.321-05:00Heat and DoorsThings are really starting to move along quickly now. A few big things and a bunch of details. It's the details at the end that usually get us. The projects we do ourselves get to the 99% complete stage in a reasonable amount of time. It's that last 1% that can take months, nay years to get done. But when you've hired a contractor to do the work, he has a very strong incentive to finish it 100%: the final payment.
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-bF4zPuLELdw/ULgE_avpxqI/AAAAAAAABqc/klsBJSXOlQQ/s1600/Nov+29+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-bF4zPuLELdw/ULgE_avpxqI/AAAAAAAABqc/klsBJSXOlQQ/s320/Nov+29+1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The steps up to the patio are finished and the brickwork is beautiful. I guess when you've been doing something for 30 years, you get really good at it. There is going to be a wrought iron railing up the right hand side. Apparently the building codes require it - a safety feature so someone doesn't fall off the edge.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-tmIcHP753Kc/ULgFAAOEafI/AAAAAAAABqk/aUDp3Ec7sww/s1600/Nov+29+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-tmIcHP753Kc/ULgFAAOEafI/AAAAAAAABqk/aUDp3Ec7sww/s320/Nov+29+2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This is the heat pump. I've heard positive and negative things about heat pumps so I was so-so on this. But the other option would have been to install a regular furnace. The carpenter who is working in the studio cutting trim and doors has it set at 60 degrees, but it felt a lot warmer than that. There is a ton of insulation, double the required amount in the floor, so I think it's going to be toasty. In the studio there is a unit that blows the air around; it's located up near the ceiling. It's so quiet I had to stand directly beneath it to hear the fan running. I wouldn't have liked a noisy fan.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-mhDwdReB1hw/ULgFAlejtDI/AAAAAAAABqs/d7qQHyB_jy4/s1600/Nov+29+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-mhDwdReB1hw/ULgFAlejtDI/AAAAAAAABqs/d7qQHyB_jy4/s320/Nov+29+3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The powder room now has a door.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-OHzgwCxDQZY/ULgFBcIGSjI/AAAAAAAABqw/MFDtC9weQ78/s1600/Nov+29+4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-OHzgwCxDQZY/ULgFBcIGSjI/AAAAAAAABqw/MFDtC9weQ78/s320/Nov+29+4.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
One of the elf doors going into the eaves area. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This is the garage side of the stairwell. That door leads into the area where there will be a hot water heater and another heater to keep the area warm.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-e8ZH2yO6uOw/ULgFCecknDI/AAAAAAAABrA/e6xrliH4MH4/s1600/Nov+29+6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-e8ZH2yO6uOw/ULgFCecknDI/AAAAAAAABrA/e6xrliH4MH4/s320/Nov+29+6.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Classy brick steps coming from the walkway into the garage.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Painting on Monday, garage doors on Tuesday or Wednesday, flooring after that. Finish up the electrical work and plumbing, install the powder room fixtures and my work sink and cabinetry, lay a new front walkway and put in a new driveway. Bank balance, zero.</div>

Although at this house, it's a day early as I do the big cook on Saturday. Have to work around other peoples' families' plans. Here are a bunch of pictures. The siding is almost completely up and the brickwork is moving along nicely. The spackle guys are beholden to the humidity and have to wait for each layer of spackle to dry before sanding it. There are fans blowing full blast in the studio to help the process along.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-iRUMNiTkh1I/UK-ZpTyg3EI/AAAAAAAABoo/LjjptW003kk/s1600/Nov+25+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-iRUMNiTkh1I/UK-ZpTyg3EI/AAAAAAAABoo/LjjptW003kk/s320/Nov+25+1.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Door to the studio, notice the beautiful step.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-cgX02oA1VZI/UK-Zp4OuwuI/AAAAAAAABos/VNZ255te-uc/s1600/Nov+25+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-cgX02oA1VZI/UK-Zp4OuwuI/AAAAAAAABos/VNZ255te-uc/s320/Nov+25+2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
These are the steps from the walkway up to the patio. They weren't part of the original plan but the drainage issue forced quite a few alterations and this is one of them.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WoUUseXjqQk/UK-Zqms5j-I/AAAAAAAABo4/bZvk_RflupU/s1600/Nov+25+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WoUUseXjqQk/UK-Zqms5j-I/AAAAAAAABo4/bZvk_RflupU/s320/Nov+25+3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We paid extra for these fancy garage doors.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-7QC70GOyZzI/UK-Zrk1S90I/AAAAAAAABpA/IPhxZnDlFZ8/s1600/Nov+25+4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-7QC70GOyZzI/UK-Zrk1S90I/AAAAAAAABpA/IPhxZnDlFZ8/s320/Nov+25+4.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This is the covered walkway from the house. It's going to make a very nice little sitting area.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Lv-76k7xOcU/UK-Zs5Y6uUI/AAAAAAAABpI/OEJd9nqFu9c/s1600/Nov+25+5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Lv-76k7xOcU/UK-Zs5Y6uUI/AAAAAAAABpI/OEJd9nqFu9c/s320/Nov+25+5.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The interior of the garage. Another change resulting from the drainage issue: those two windows in the back had to be shortened because the grade is coming up a lot higher.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-j2dK0TDC-XQ/UK-ZtIRgQEI/AAAAAAAABpQ/No1A7P-yS04/s1600/Nov+25+6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-j2dK0TDC-XQ/UK-ZtIRgQEI/AAAAAAAABpQ/No1A7P-yS04/s320/Nov+25+6.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The stairway up to the studio.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-V9K5TrAmoPc/UK-Zt2DMOOI/AAAAAAAABpY/oP6i_GX7UvE/s1600/Nov+25+7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-V9K5TrAmoPc/UK-Zt2DMOOI/AAAAAAAABpY/oP6i_GX7UvE/s320/Nov+25+7.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
At the top of the stairs, looking into the studio. The half wall on the right goes to a full wall and my work sink and cabinetry will be located along this wall. The doorway on the right goes into the powder room. The short doorway goes into the eaves storage area.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-De43jhk4ZLw/UK-ZumLLwBI/AAAAAAAABpg/xv8s6UzY3Qw/s1600/Nov+25+8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-De43jhk4ZLw/UK-ZumLLwBI/AAAAAAAABpg/xv8s6UzY3Qw/s320/Nov+25+8.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Looking into one of the storage areas. It's not totally obvious, but at the far end we were able to extend the available area into the space above the stairwell. So that's about 16 square feet of extra storage. Can never have too much storage space.</div>

This is the other storage space. I'm working on a plan to build moveable racks for quilt storage. Have to think in 3 dimensions in order to allow for the sloping ceiling. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
What's left: finish the siding and trim, finish the brickwork, paint, install the flooring, install the powder room fixtures, install the work sink and cabinetry, install the fixtures and lights, install the garage doors, install the HVAC system, rip up the driveway and make a new one, rip up the walkway to the front door and lay a new one, finish fixing the window in the master bedroom that had to be adjusted to compensate for the drainage issue. I'm sure there are lots of other things on that list, but this is what comes to mind immediately.</div>

We have had plumbers, electricians, masons, along with the regular crew, all running up and down ladders and stairs, inside and outside. I have a ton of pictures of duplex outlets, switches, light fixtures, and pipes, all of which are boring unless it's your own space. The most interesting is the brick on the front of the garage and in the walkway. It would have been fantastic if we could afford to brick the entire building, or even the entire front, but that's not going to happen. The brick looks really nice, and it matches the house nearly perfectly.<br />

This week I also picked out flooring, bathroom fixtures, a work sink, and cabinets for around the work sink. This coming week the insulation will be installed and then they can begin hanging the wall board. Also the siding on the outside. I think the end is in sight. Hopefully it arrives before we run out of money.</div>

They put their harnesses on and had tether ropes so they could swing back and forth across the 1 in 12 pitched roof. It was amazing to watch them work, and a little bit breathtaking. The main house has a slate roof, but putting slate on the addition would have priced it out of an acceptable range. There are slate look-alike products that from a distance are almost indistinguishable from the real thing. They even install slate catchers to further the illusion. That's those little copper colored things along the lower edge. With real slate, having one of them slide off the roof and clock somebody - well, it would probably take their head right off.<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Below is the full view. That ladder leaning up against the side will have to be taken down and stored until Hurricane Sandy passes through. The predictions are pretty dire, with high winds and lots of rain lasting two days. I have my fingers and toes crossed that no trees come down. The authorities are saying to prepare for power outages of several days. We have gas for the generator and it's been serviced since its last non-performance in July. At the grocery store this morning all the store brand water was gone but I could buy a more expensive brand. Not exactly sure why I need water, since we're not on a well, but I guess it's possible for the pumping station to be out of commission. The dumpster is full of potential flying objects with no way to secure any of them. And I expect the spot-a-pot to get blown over.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-WknPF_laZQ0/UIxLNtfvgVI/AAAAAAAABnI/Dom-FSjN-sI/s1600/Oct+26+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-WknPF_laZQ0/UIxLNtfvgVI/AAAAAAAABnI/Dom-FSjN-sI/s320/Oct+26+2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
These bricks for are the front of the garage and in the walkway area. I don't know if these are real used bricks or bricks that have been made to look used. Either way, they probably cost more than "new" bricks.</div>
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And the powder room area has been roughed in. I'm getting better at climbing the ladder, but that moment when I have to get back on to climb down always makes me pause. I wonder if it's something you get used to. The construction guys go up and down the ladders without a thought, sometimes carrying a heavy load. Of course, their knees are most likely in a lot better shape than mine are.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I doubt that there will be much work done on Monday and Tuesday. But we'll have an excellent opportunity to see how the drainage system works</div>

Good thing I'm not very tall because those doors into the storage areas are pretty short. The slanted roof makes it difficult to make them any higher. But look at all that nice storage space.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9o-PWTpPQ8k/UImX2Qf8wRI/AAAAAAAABl8/7x-bR3Re-qM/s1600/Oct+25+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9o-PWTpPQ8k/UImX2Qf8wRI/AAAAAAAABl8/7x-bR3Re-qM/s320/Oct+25+3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Looking towards the stairwell. The contractor convinced me to install a powder room. We had already planned the rough in for plumbing in case future owners wanted to install a bathroom, but I guess it's a good idea to do it now. I won't be giving up too much space and I won't have to leave to use the potty.</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And just now a very long truck pulled up with the shingles for the roof. The plan is to install all the shingles before we feel any effects from Hurricane Sandy. Which I hope heads far out to sea long before it gets this far north.</div>

It rained most of the day yesterday so they couldn't do any work. We have the shape of a garage/studio. The first photo shows the dormer in the front. On either side under the dormers I will have storage space. I'm thinking that little alcove will be a very nice place to put a comfy chair for contemplation. Earlier in the week I climbed a ladder and walked around the future studio. Discovered I do not like high ladders, and so won't be visiting the studio space again until the stairs are built.<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

On Wednesday and Thursday lumber deliveries began to show up. Friday, nothing happened.
<br />
<br />
This morning a crew arrived before 8am and began unloading their tools. They worked until after lunch, when they were stopped by a heavy downpour. Things are beginning to take on a recognizable shape: two garage doors for cars, a door into the garage, and a door to go into the stairwell up to the studio.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-LL5G-lEy1EU/UHye3zJnujI/AAAAAAAABkk/W8Wn6ATEGuw/s1600/2012-10-15+Garage.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-LL5G-lEy1EU/UHye3zJnujI/AAAAAAAABkk/W8Wn6ATEGuw/s320/2012-10-15+Garage.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Looking towards the driveway, you can see the struts for the roof. My sunflowers have bloomed and are now growing their seeds. We had a slight frost over the weekend, but it was enough to take out the basil and pretty much finish the tomatoes. I grew the tomatoes in pots and not only have they grown hugely out of the pot but they are spreading all over the euonymus and into the pachysandra. Next Spring there will be many, many tomato seedlings. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Last Monday I received an email from Quilt National. It's different from the old days where, when you got your notification from a show, if the envelope was thick, they were returning your slides, and you knew it was a rejection. And you could shred the letter. Nowadays, notifications are by email. If there is an attachment, that is a good indication that it's an acceptance. My email from QN had an attachment, but I was still a bit hesitant to open it. But, yeah! it was an acceptance. Hooray! An eleven page attachment with all sorts of forms to fill out and electronic signatures. They want all that information, plus the quilt, by this coming Friday. I shipped my quilt out today and it should arrive there by Wednesday. I would love to post a picture here, but they have very strict rules about publishing the quilts before the show. I could display it, but I can't prevent somebody from taking the image and publishing it somewhere else, and that is a big no-no. It will be under wraps until next May when the show opens at the Dairy Barn in Athens, Ohio. </div>

We have been looking at a cinder block fortress for a month now. During that time, the plumbing and electrical rough-ins have been installed and passed inspection. Several tons of stone have been delivered. The dirt has been pushed around, filling up most of the trenches around the foundation. And today the base for the concrete slab has been laid out.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-qPXaR0m8gvI/UG7258ZjUaI/AAAAAAAABjc/4uFxU0Ekbo0/s1600/Oct-5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-qPXaR0m8gvI/UG7258ZjUaI/AAAAAAAABjc/4uFxU0Ekbo0/s320/Oct-5.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
All nice and neat, very nicely gridded, just like a quilt. Weather permitting, the cement will be poured on Monday and the trusses will be delivered on Tuesday. And then we should really see some progress.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Meanwhile, I've received acceptances for two shows. <a href="http://www.schweinfurthartcenter.org/exhibits/QAQ.html" target="_blank">Quilts=Art=Quilts</a>, in Auburn NY and <a href="http://chandlercenter.org/visual-arts/exhibition-hall.html" target="_blank">Art Quilts VXII</a> in Chandler AZ. Here is the info from the postcard, just in case you're in the area. </div>

Another round of cinder block was added and the outside of the building was covered with cement. The plumber and electrician will come next week, they say. And the frames are being constructed off site, partially assembled. So we are in a holding pattern and getting a little tired of only seeing cinder blocks. I have found a considerable number of good sized rocks for my future rock garden. I imagine that there are quite a few more buried under all the dirt. I have this vision of a huge mesh screen, piled with the rock filled dirt. And then washed with bucket loads of water until all the dirt is washed away. And I have a ton or more of rocks.<br />
<br />
Meanwhile, in my art world...I was invited to be a part of this exhibit in Marietta, Pennsylvania. Contemporary Threads, with 13 fiber artists, is at the <a href="http://mariettaarthouse.com/index.html" target="_blank">Marietta Art House</a> and runs through December 16. Midway in the show, the current pieces will be swapped out and new work will be on display. And in November there will be a Fiber Bazaar, with all sorts of small items for sale, just in time for the holidays.<br />
<br />
The show is in an old house with a beautiful wrap around on three sides porch. The floors are intricate inlaid wood patterns, something you would never see today. The show is open Wednesday to Saturday, 12 to 5, and Sunday, 1 to 5.<br />

The contractor came by to see what had been done and said one of the walls needed to be another round higher, so they will have to bring back the cement mixer and add a few more cinder blocks.
Meanwhile, we heard that the sunflower fields were in bloom, and off we went. The farmer only plants the sunflowers every other year, crop rotation I assume, so we didn't get to see these last year. It was foggy when we first got there. As the sun rose higher in the sky, the fog burned off and oh! the beautiful colors.
<br />
<br />
Twining up the sunflower stalks are blue morning glories, the perfect complement to the yellow sunflowers.<br />

I'm growing sunflowers in my garden. It's been a real struggle. I planted seeds, some came up, and then the birds or bunnies ate the seedlings. I planted more seeds, some came up, and the birds and bunnies ate them again. I planted more seeds, and protected them from the birds and bunnies. Some came up. They grew to about 2 feet tall, and the deer ate the tops. I planted more seeds, protected them from the birds and the bunnies and the deer. Some came up. But I didn't protect them well enough, because the deer ate the tops again. Luckily, the plants sent off replacement shoots, and now they are about 6 feet high with incipient buds. Unfortunately, they seem to be right in the path of the future driveway. So it will be a race to see if they bloom and go to seed before the new driveway has to be excavated. </div>

Today they were here briefly to set a few more blocks and take away the cement mixer. They've cleaned up the area a bit and it's ready for the next phase.<br />
<br />

This is where the covered walkway is going to be, with the entry way to the garage and the entry way to the stairway up to my studio.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In the process of digging up the yard, lots of big rocks were uncovered. I'm gathering some of them with the intention of putting them in a future rock garden. Granddaughter Zoe informed me that "rocks do not grow in gardens." I don't know, there seem to be an awful lot of them in those piles of dirt.</div>
<br />Cathy Kleemanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10304025544005408008noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10606229.post-81988286195383865912012-08-27T19:01:00.001-04:002012-08-27T19:01:39.169-04:00The FortressThere is definitely progress. It's beginning to look like a fortress. The engineers and architects had to do some re-planning in order to compensate for the water drainage problem. They are going to build the grade up higher around the back of the garage so that all the water will drain into a swale. In order to support the increased amount of soil, there has to be more cinder block. Looks like <b>lots</b> more cinder block. It's not all that clear to me, but then I'm sure they wouldn't understand how to do surface design on fabric.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FJyRvqjCIFY/UDv5cD2fPGI/AAAAAAAABg4/MFCrUqrPvN0/s1600/aug+27+01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FJyRvqjCIFY/UDv5cD2fPGI/AAAAAAAABg4/MFCrUqrPvN0/s320/aug+27+01.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Over the weekend it rained. Lots and lots. This space here, which still hasn't drained totally, had water covering the first course of cinder block, about 8 inches. Would have been more if we hadn't move the pipe attached to the downspout so that that water drained down the driveway instead of into this area. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm beginning to think that this would be a whole lot less stressful if I could go away and come back to a finished project. But then I would still want to know what was happening, so staying around is better. </div>

On Thursday afternoon we noticed a big orange X painted in the grass. It didn't seem to line up with anything or even be on any plans. But on Friday morning we saw a big truck delivering this delightful addition to our construction zone. I had been wondering how the workers were answering the call of nature (and hoping it wasn't in the bushes), so I'm glad they now have a designated pot. But I wish it weren't smack dab in the front yard. It's the first thing anybody sees when they crest the hill and drive by our house.</div>

They were loaded with cinder blocks, huge bags of sand, and cement mix. It took most of the day to unload it all and distribute around the foundation hole.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Nobody worked yesterday, but the guys arrived bright and early at 6:30am this morning. At least a dozen men moved the cinder blocks around the area and closer to their final destination. The main contractor and the architect were also in attendance to solve the drainage problem. All the rain that falls onto our patio creates a waterfall at the head of the driveway. It's been a nuisance, especially in winter when it freezes, because it runs right by the back door. They had to do some redesigning to divert the water around to the far side of the garage where it will disperse onto the grass (and hopefully not into the neighbor's yard next door). This is going to involve more stair steps going from the walkway to the patio than we had originally planned.</div>
<br />

This is my new kitten Buster. He is 4 1/2 months old and most of the time is a real dynamo. But he does know how to relax. This is his "What, me worry?" pose.</div>

Saw elk, big horn sheep, a coyote, black bears, pikas, ground squirrels, and fantastic scenery. We flew United Airlines and the only reason I mention that is that they screwed us royally on both ends of the trip. I will not choose United again unless there is no other way to get there.
<br />
<br />
While we were gone construction began on the new garage/studio. This is what we saw yesterday afternoon when we returned. The footers have been dug and concrete poured. Iit rained after that and it looks like the trenches are filled with mud. Not so, it's just a thin layer of mud on top of the concrete.<br />

The dogwood tree is a casualty of the construction. It was just too big to justify the expense of moving it.</div>

The root system of a white pine tree that we had taken down 20 years ago. Persistent little buggers.</div>

The larger hole on the left of this picture is where the corner of the garage and the entrance to the stairs up to the studio will be.</div>

And this is the view from above. They haven't arrived yet to work, so I don't know what's going to happen today. My husband is mourning the damage done to the lawn. He was hoping the dirt would be contained in a nice area around the construction hole. Not likely.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Such a mess. And since it's rained several times since this began, we have mud rivulets running down the hill through the grass. There are sediment controls set up, but I don't know if that was done before or after the rain. I think I'm glad I wasn't here to witness the digging; it's sort of like the loss of an old familiar friend.</div>
